So far I think there will be 4 or 5 of us there. ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 18:26:49 +0900 Subject: [Baren 4669] Re: an idea for discussion Maria wrote: > So how about a self-portrait exchange in the future? If I see a bunch of positive feedback on this idea coming through, then I'll very much consider setting this as a theme for Exchange #4. (People are already working on prints for Exchange #3 ...). If there's not much reaction, then I'll let it ride ... *** Jeanne wrote: > I notice that Dave has a movable light. What bulb do you use > for your woodblock printing? I'm not sure where you got that info on a 'movable' light. I'm extremely lax on the way I've got my workshop set up (still feeling that it is just a 'temporary' place ... after thirteen years now!), and don't have good lighting set up at all. For carving I use a bulb and flask hanging down over the block, which is OK, but for printing, it's just the awful ceiling fixture, supplemented by the window (during the day, and when the sun isn't shining right in the window, in which case my only solution is to close the curtains and work in the gloom). I'm looking forward to the day when I move into a real workshop that I'll design for myself - north facing, with proper workbenches and real lighting. I still have to clean up all my stuff to make a space to sleep every night ... *** The following note came from my ISP here in Tokyo this afternoon, and will affect the operation of the [Baren] mailing list: > On Wednesday, 23 June 1999, the server on which ASAHI Net's > mailing list service runs will be upgraded. Portraits of the Baren members as they perceive themselves! I really do think this would be a fun idea. Plus, for those of us who have a hard time settling on one idea (am I the only one?) this would at least narrow it down. I've done several over the years both in print and clay. My "Self Portrait As A Raven" (linocut) is currently in a show travelling around Ireland. I really enjoy the metaphorical perspective. I've also done Self Portrait As A Newt...as a house....as a flying and stinging insect... Question -- does anyone know if there is a directory of printmaking studio/workshops for the States? I am considering temporarily relocating to NYstate and will want to make sure I can get access to a workshop. Also--Is it hard to pick up used relief presses? Cheers and Thanks! I know what you mean about lighting. I am always changing lights, adding lights on swivels, etc; A North light is really the answer is'nt it? Someday I will have a dome light installed in the Northern part of my studio, that should do the trick. I vote for the Self Portrait idea. It should be different. Those that do not like that idea can sign up for Exchange 5. Good idea Maria!!!! Jeanne ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #599 ***************************
