See: http://www.vanartgallery.bc.ca> for details. I missed the exhibit when it was in Atlanta. Now I have a second chance to see it on the other side of the continent. Quite frankly, I'd rather see it anywhere but the Atlanta High Museum anyway! - -John ------------------------------ From: Wanda Robertson Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 08:42:17 -0700 Subject: [Baren 4358] Re: Concert Suite. I'm sure the Maestro was as thrilled to receive your print, as you were in presenting it! Thanks for letting us share in the pleasure. Wanda ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. I never thought of asking my Beauty Parlor people how they keep their scissors sharp. I will bring in a knife and study her sharpening skills. A picture is worth a thousand words! Dave There is sooo much information on your pages that it is sometimes hard to remember that I have been there but forgot where I was. (That is a convoluted sentence, it ever I heard one). I will look it up again. Thanks Graham What a tribute, Have you come off of Cloud Nine yet? Most often scissors are sharpened by grinding. This is not something you want done to good chisels and knifes. Please don't hand your good tools over to someone else to sharpen unless you are quite sure they know what they are doing. I've returned from teaching a week's class on woodblock printing at Horizon's (an elderhostel class) that was very successful. 5 enthusiastic students. Baren's print exchange #1 was very much appreciated. Although I showed the prints at the start of the class, it wasn't until students had actually carved & printed blocks and then returned to examine the prints at the end of the week that they began to appreciate the wide variety of techniques and expressions contained in this collection. Again, many thanks to all who participated. Can't wait to see exchange number 2. Karla H: one of the students noticed the face under the splendid red & blue "feathers" in Mardi Revis (Lundi). And, sure enough, as I tilted the print into the light there it appeared! One question: Yesterday I was given a copy of Keiko Hiratsuka Moore's 1973 publication "Moku Hanga: How to make Japanese wood block prints"; printed by Acropolis Books Ltd., Washington, D. C. I've not read it all yet but it seems to be a very straight-forward work with numerous splendid drawing illustrations and several fine black & white prints. Are folks familiar with this work? I'd never come across it before. Her father was Un-ichi Hiratsuka. Interesting to hear about this ... _and_ April's teaching, _and_ Graham's upcoming workshop. I noticed yesterday that Matt too, has been busy teaching, doing a course over the past few days. I sure hope some of these students get enthusiastic about woodblock! By the way, Matt has obviously been too busy to let us know, but there are a whole bunch of new prints up on his web site. http://www.ooloopress.com ... and head over to the Gallery section, then to the 1999 prints ... He's also got a section of prints by his students - very interesting work. *** Another bunch of 'new' printmakers have been added to the 'Printmakers on the Web' page in the Encyclopedia ... Yesterday I went to check my PO box to find 2 special treats - the catalog from the show that Hideshi is in (he has a great print in there, the catalog is beautifully printed and the show itself is very interesting), and Michael's lovely package w/the book and CD. What talented people we have on this forum! Best regards, Sarah ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #559 ***************************
