It is there. Bottom left hand set of steps. Move the curser around and when it changes to a pointing hand or finger (on a Mac) I don't know what PC's do (if anything) you will be able to open it. I do recommend that any of you that can go to these exhibitions do so, as Mr. Landau's work -- especially his woodcuts -- is quite wonderful. The opening for the Woodmere show was today, but I was too busy to get there. Apparently, the Woodmere show is not traveling to the California venues that Roxanne mentioned as was originally stated, but I imagine that much of the work will be the same. Here's the complete run-down: "Teaching and Learning: Earl Horter's Students" 7 March to 16 May ~ the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia PA "Prints by Earl Horter and Jacob Landau" 20 March to 8 May ~ the Print Centre, Philadelphia PA "The Heroic Obsession: the Graphic Art of Jacob Landau" 11 April to 27 June ~ Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia PA Roosevelt Art Show [selected works] 22 May to 23 May ~ Roosevelt Public School, Roosevelt NJ Tobey C. Moss Gallery [one person show] 22 June to 9 July ~ Los Angeles CA The Print Centre [one person show] 9 July to 21 August ~ Philadelphia PA George Krevsky Fine Art [one person show] 9 September to 2 October ~ San Francisco CA *** Has anyone on [Baren] tried to print hanga-style from linoleum? [heresy!] I was wondering if such a thing was possible. To its merits, lino would give a nice smooth printing surface; but linoleum often has an oiliness that might repel water and I would think the burlap backing on unmounted linoleum would tend to decay pretty rapidly when exposed to all that water. Nevertheless, has anyone tried this or have any thoughts on the matter? I wonder if some of the new synthetics like Resingrave might hold up better... I've got lots of thoughts about this work Michael, but I'm a bit hesitant to ask my questions, as I think I may be misunderstood ... Your work and mine are about as opposite as woodblock prints can possibly be; mine is extremely old-fashioned, 'clean' in outline and colour, and simple to comprehend; yours is abstract, full of texture and roughness, and (for me) difficult to understand. As a woodcutter myself, I find the tones and textures of your prints extremely attractive, but when I then look at the entire print, I can't understand what message this interesting technique has been used to communicate. I don't want to suggest for an instant that you should be making pictures of 'pretty girls under the cherry blossoms' like my latest 'surimono' print (I'm not _that_ crazy!) but I do find myself unable to answer some basic questions when I look at work like yours: Why did you make these? What do they mean? When people buy them, what do they _see_ in there? Please don't be upset by these questions - I ask them in a spirit of trying to learn, not as criticism. The other evening, I was strolling home from the park. It was late and quite dark, it had recently been raining and the sidewalks and streets were glistening with reflections from lights here and there. Looking up the street I could see a mist gathering in the distance. A thousand levels of grey tone ... now what a print _that_ would be if made with your techniques! And it would be something I could appreciate on both levels - stunning technical achievement, _and_ emotional impact. Am I being too simplistic in asking for a visible 'meaning' in a print? Michael? Anybody? Dave ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 06:17:26 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [none] This is from Ray H in Vermont. Graham--your suite looks magnificent! Seeing all 4 at once must be quite the experience. Michael--I've just been to your site and seen your new work and find it stunning. A technical question: to get the soft bleeding into the white areas, do you add extra moisture to the paper after printing--say with a soft brush and clear water? Lu Fang does that occasionally to bring color into white areas. Your work brings to mind the woodcuts of a Dutch artist, Frans Baake. He has done a series of prints based on islands, usually rather bleak islands, all in black and white, with very stark carving and much of the rough surface of the block showing through. At firsst they strike the viewer as abstracts, but then--perhaps helped by the title--the print is seen not only as design but as "The Mountain Side", "The Waterfall", etc. I look forward to your response to David's questions. The world of woodblock printing is indeed vast! One final note, when looking at your prints I kept being drawn into considerations of the relationships among land, water, and development.
