[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Friday, 2 April 1999 Volume 07 : Number 511 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 08:25:59 EST Subject: [Baren 3796] rice paste, etc. For anyone in or near NYC looking for rice paste in tubes, you can get it at a place called Sunrise Mart, a Japanese market on East 9th Street, or at Kinokuniya Bookstores, which is in the Rockefeller Center area. Sure saves time mixing, cooking etc. (and I hate to cook!) and it's cheap - less than $2.00 per tube. Also, for those looking for methyl cellulose in NYC, you can find it at Talas, which is on Broadway. Also, Talas has a lot of other interesting stuff including some sort of special sharp tool which April showed me that she said is great at scraping off little blots. April, what is that tool called? happy printing! When I carve a line it looks really flat on top. Your lines seems to look sculpted round. A couple of pages are eagerly waiting for your contributions. Go: http://www.mariarango.com Visit the Studio, then check out the Links page. I would like to place links to your sites there, so if you would send me your URL off-list, I will consider that permission to do so. Then visit the MURAL, which is very skimpy without you! Let's fill it up with your .gifs and .jpegs. Again, please send me your graphics off-list. I do hope everyone contributes. As for the Invited Artist page (not open yet), it's designed to give websiteless artists a chance to show some stuff but I'm still trying to figure out the specifics to post for this; I will keep everyone updated. Now here is another thought that I have taken for granted: there are people all over the world looking at our art; fellow bareners, complete strangers once, are talking weekly over the modem lines, sharing knowledge, thoughts, feelings and most of all, art. Doesn't that make you say: wow!? Good health to all, Maria ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Chase" Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 14:04:48 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3801] Re: website updates Maria; Wow, what a great web site. It was a fantastic tour throught the studio, print room, your personal page , the whole 9 yards! If you have not been there , get ready for a treat. Dave; Many, many thanks for the post on "The effect of paste on the impression. "A picture is still worth a thousand words." When I asked the question; "Wheat paste vs. rice paste", I never expected such a numerous amount of answers. Thanks to EVERYONE who took the time to reply. Marco; I tried and tried to get to your URL but with no luck, with either the one you gave or the one Graham suggested. I cannot blame my Puter as I can get to all the others. Still would love to see the site. Maybe tomorrow my computer will be kinder to me. Michael; Does kampai mean goodbye???? Hideshi; Would still like the catalog to your show. Let me know how much to send and I will translate it into dollars. Then send a money order. Is that alright with you? Hey guys and gals,.I collect printmaking calalogs, so if anyone is in a show, let me know about it, OK? Thats it for now. I have a wood cut waiting for me. I hear it calling me, and when you see it you will know why. The book is in german, english and japanese so I guess the most of you can find a suitable language. If anyone is interested in it let me know about. http://www.t0.or.at/~mikasch/rekon/start.htm michael ------------------------------ From: mmflavio Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 16:27:18 +0000 Subject: [Baren 3804] Re: woodblock show Graham wrote: > Now for a comment about you woodblocks. Pretty damn exciting stuff. Hey Graham, thank you for the encouragement. They are water based; I make my own inks from dry pigments. Lots of work but you will see some of it at the workshop. Fractals are one of my passions and the line comes partially from that, partially from my personality. They are 9" x 12" (I had 4 months to set up the show, find the models and do the work which I am still madly completing). thank you and see you soon, Marco Flavio ------------------------------ From: mmflavio Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 16:39:41 +0000 Subject: [Baren 3805] Re: Woodblocks Printmaking show in San Francisco dean brink wrote: > Excellent prints and idea. There are gays in the show (whom immigrated here from many places for many different reasons). There are no american born in the show and that is one of the concepts behind the show now that San Francisco is gentryfying so rapidly. People born out of this country who are being resisted, propositions like 187 and 209 that target those of us who are here even if legally and the battle for bilingual education (which is slowly being lost) are those this installation is dedicated to. It is about reminding to San Franciscans why we like being here (aside from the weather). Its openness, its policy of acceptance of those who are different (as you know), its willingness to have improbable communities is what made many of us come here. And we are going to stand for it. So for this show no drag queens (though should in my next installation one of my models should show up in drag it would be more than welcome). Only people who immigrated to SF, regardless of their gender identity. And the music has been as eclectic as the models: from Andrea Bocelli to Ustad Bismillah Khan. People choose what they feel has a tie to their persona, and I am not here to question that but just to celebrate it. More images will be available after the show (I do not want to give it all away before the opening). Thanks foer the comments, again Marco ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 15:00:49 +0900 Subject: [Baren 3808] Re: leaves ... This I think, is just an artifact of the fuzzy .jpg photograph. None of the lines are rounded at all. The ones that have some 'width' left are completely flat on top, but the narrower ones just come to a sharp edge on top ... I've updated the photos with last night's carving work ... http://woodblock.com/surimono/1999/1999album.html *** Maria's new web pages have already undergone a major update. If you didn't take a look the other day, please don't miss it now! http://www.mariarango.com Congratulations Maria, this is excellent work. Do you _have_ all those books in your library?!? Also, please show us some photographs of the _inside_ of your studio. >From the outside it looks fabulous ...
