I got a 1st edition of Michener's Floating World for $40. Today I saw a 2nd edition for $75 so you have to be careful. A lot of interesting woodblocks. Go to the search and type in woodblock and you will get them all. Today there were about 155 available and most were Japanese. It's a fun site to explore. There are very interesting things at the eBAY auction, although it's become an addiction for a few people I know. I've picked up a half dozen prints and a couple of books through it. As for books, I always check the search engines (bookfinder, bibliofind, etc.) first to get an idea of the going price before committing to a bid. On one occasion, the eBAY bid ($695) for Toshi Yoshida's "Varieties of Japanese Prints, vol.1" was over twice what an online bookseller was asking ($300)... In my experiences, the sellers have behaved themselves, although I've also seen several offset lithos being schlepped as woodblock prints. eBAY's policy is "buyer beware" and the only official safeguard seems to be the feedback rating system. Occasionally, there has been some Japanese hand tools (planes, chisels) listed. - -John ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 09:15:06 -0800 Subject: [Baren 3707] Re: e-bay >Has anyone used e-bay? Have surfed around the site. Most interesting and hard not to put in a bit. I was looking at stamps. We have a couple from California that stay at Marnie's B&B who told us about this site. Cliff has usually got model kits listed. He likes it and finds it a clean and easy way to sell off his collection as he purchase other items.......Art... It was then that the seller realized that a copied image is not a Japanese print. Also make sure that packaging and shipping is clear. I have received "bent" creased prints. Buyer beware - but it is fun. Joe ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Wed, 24 Mar 1999 08:06:59 +0900 Subject: [Baren 3709] Re: various ... All the information that people have sent in about how they made their exchange prints has been uploaded to 'their' pages in the relevant section of the website. Go to the same 'woodblock.com' address, and choose 'Exchange 1999'. Select Ray's name to read his entry ... (This is maybe a good time to remind everybody who was participated in the exchange, that space is available for you if you have anything that you would like people to read while they look at your print - a description of the process, your thoughts on why you chose that particular image, etc. etc. Just send it to me directly in an email, and I will update your page.) *** New prints in the 'Who is Baren?' page last night ... from New Zealand ... *** It seems that my message last weekend about sign-ups for the new exchange was one of the half-dozen [Baren] postings that evening that was chewed up by a gremlin on the 'net somewhere. So ... a reminder that the first stage sign-up for the next exchange is now open (people who weren't in the previous exchange). The sheet is found at the same 'Administration Links' page that I mentioned above ... *** And now, another in what seems to be a continuous series of 'bad news' postings from Dave ... I received a phone call yesterday evening from the craftsmen's association - yes, it's time to head off to another funeral ... Mr. Ogura Hanbei, the 'dean' of the carvers here, has passed away. This is another very big blow; Mr. Ito, who died in December, and this gentleman were the two oldest, most respected, and most skillful of the remaining carvers. Nobody else comes close to their level of skills. For me now (on the carving side of things anyway) there is nobody left who I feel able to visit when I need advice or have questions to ask ... I'll let everyone know what works as the sticky experiment starts to coalesce over the next month or so. I still have lots of questions about techniques used in many of the Exchange prints (in later posts). dean ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 20:57:44 -0500 Subject: [Baren 3711] Condolences Dave, Most sorry to hear of the passing of another of your friends and mentors. While you, who knew him, can morn him on a more personal level, we are left to morn him in a more historical way. Centuries of tradition is passing with these last in the line of carvers and printers, like the last colorful leaves falling from a tree in Autumn. Their splendor will be missed. My condolences to the family and many friends of Mr. Ogura Hanbei. Gary ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V6 #501 ***************************
