I think it is a foolish savings not to have them. Bea asked: > Please explain. Etching presses come with or without micro gauges. A press roller is lowered by turning a crank, spindle or other handle on either side of the press bed. If the press does not have gauges, you have no way of keeping the pressure level. It is easy to lower one side more than the other. This inconsistant pressure could cause printing problems. A well built press with micro gauges eliinates this problem. The gauges have calebrated scales which allow you to accurately lower or raise the rollers resulting in a level pressure on the bed. If you lower the bed to 8/2 on both sides you can be confident of the result. An unbalanced roller can not only cause problems in the printing but could also damage the printer itself. BTW - some artists use the gauges to leave both sides at different levels on purpose to create special effects. But you need gauges to do this. This is not something I have tried. I have enough problems getting a good print when things are level. :-)) Hope this answers your question. Ray, I just bought my press blankets at Rembrandt Graphics, and I believe the price I paid was considerably lower than you've quoted above. I was going to be up in their neck of the woods, so I compared Rembrandt and Renaissance beforehand. Rembrandt's prices were nearly 50 cents cheaper per linear inch, and they will cut to a custom size. Consider also whether the price Takach quotes is for woven or pressed felt. Personally, I like my pusher blanket to be woven felt and the cushion and catcher to be pressed felt (seems to help with the mezzotints). My press is smaller than yours, but I paid about thirty bucks for my blankets -- much to my surprise, I might add. *** Madame Sangria wrote: >I took several classes at Fleisher. This coming summer marks the conclusion of our centennial celebrations, which started with the enormous "20x12" show featuring most of the participants in the annual Challenge exhibitions these past twenty years. Fleisher, as far as I know, is the only institution of it's kind in the US offering free art instruction to adults. Classes are packed. The kids program is filled to bursting on the first day of registration. We've been lucky to receive very generous funding to keep the whole thing going from foundations and private donors. It's always a bit tenuous every fiscal year, but it looks like we'll be expanding into a new building next spring as well. So fear not, Maria, Fleisher is thriving. As for the Horter show, I think it will be up until June or July. I'll get back to you about the exact dates. *** Dave wrote: >Yes, it's the moment you've all been waiting for! Yes, it's the moment I've all been waiting for! I brought my husband in to sit in front of the computer and we watched the show. Just wonderful to see the beauty and the differences among artists (wish I could have smelled the inks). His comment was "wow, our own private museum". Is there a place that tells size of each? Thank you all, especially James and Dave for getting in, out and on line. This is such a *wonderful* collection! And that we can see and admire each one as much as we want. Dave, you must have stayed up all night to get these up. They are all so wonderful and so different and just....words fail me. Congratulations to all of you, job well done! If your have anyones address this site will take you directly to the persons doorstep. (location on the street) The price you guys pay for the press is obscene. I have been thinking about this press for 4 years and now that I have an interest in waterless lithography this is becoming a big priority. But I want a combination press so the price keeps going up. Dean has a link to his web page for an explanation. How about all of you getting on the ball and writing your statements. It is only make a great page better. Graham An etching press is fine for waterless lithography. There is really no need for a litho attachment if you only use waterless. The primary difference in the litho press other than the scrapper bar is that one uses water with litho and the press is made with that in mind.
