His patron was the Pope. Carolyn, he was both, which is quite possible. Only problem was he always got plastered every time he had a ceiling to do. The Pope was understanding though, as how many years did it take Michelangelo to do the Sistine Chapel? How many Patrons would be so patient? It is used to make home made pickles crunchy among other things and can usually be found in the spices and condiments area. Computers are sometimes pretty tough too. But if you had let _that_ hold you back when you were getting involved a year ago, where would you be now? Minus a whole bunch of friends I think! Yes, I know that I said baren tying is difficult. At the level I'm trying to do it, it is! But when I made my first prints nearly twenty years ago, I neither knew that, nor cared. My lack of technical skills showed up in every print I made. But you know what, they were still pretty nifty! God-awful actually, but nifty nonetheless. You're seeing a _whole range_ of discussions on baren. Some of them will apply to you right now, some will apply to the future Gayle, some will never apply to you. Please try and be a bit more 'childlike' about this - and I'm not trying to insult you, just trying to point out that kids don't think about how 'difficult' drawing or painting is, they just dig in and do it. After all, I'm looking forward to seeing one of your (Japanese style) prints in the [Baren] exchange ... In my area it is Bryant Laboratory, Inc., 1101 Fifth St. Berkeley, CA phone (510)526-3141. They have alum. I bought some there recently. I have no idea if they ship it. One outfit that will ship alum is Colophon Book Supply. They sell supplies for marbeling (alum is also used in marbeling). I don't know their phone number. They are in Portland or Seattle, somewhere north of me. Sorry I don't have time to look up the specifics. Today I went to MacBeath Hardwood in Berkeley and bought two boards of basswood 5 feet by 13 inches by 2 inches, for $85. Then I took them to El Cerrito Mill and Lumber and they will "bust" them to four boards 5 feet by 13 inches by 3/4 inches, for $35. Now I know that Graham will tell me how he got a much better deal, so I am dying to find out how much cheaper basswood is where he lives. Some of our folks are saying they have trouble and/or won't even attempt to tie on a bamboo husk to a baren. They rather go and spend 5 buck to get the job done. Hey. If, when you were a kid, you never learned to tie up your shoe laces you would be walking around bare foot now. All it takes is practice. Go for it. Its not hard. Thanks for the suggestion for getting alum like the the grocerystore - never used it but do remember it for pickles - also got the name of a couple of local chemistry places if they don't have it in the market.
