I like the idea. I may be predjudiced since my Vampyr prints will be in the gallery Elisa is talking about, but I saw the gallery and have met Elisa and will be there tomorrow night (Friday) for the opening of September's show. Elisa offered to use her own set for the proposed Baren Exchange show, so her idea to put them under glass would be risking her own set for a month. It's a nice little gallery, by the way. For one; the local library has monthly exhibits in their main hall to showcase different types of media. This portfolio exchange is about the right number of works that they would be able to hang. I am involved with them thru my work on the Internet as they are trying to make their internet server available to local businesses and organizations. I was one of the first to sign up for their free net access. The whole idea of an art exhibition that came together thru an internet exchange would be verrrrrrrry appealling to them. Of course I would have my own portfolio exhibited. There could be information displayed pointing to the Baren Forum and members web-sites for those interested in contacting the artists. I know that Ray had also wanted to put together a similar type of exhibit to travel thru several galleries in Florida. With all his contacts in the art world this could give woodblock prints a large showing in the South East. What about the West coast ? Canada ? Baren membership is so wide spread that if even 1/4 of the exchange participants could come thru with one exhibit.....it would probably amount to something like a "National" showing. I know that Dave has plans to also put the portfolio on the web....so what does everyone think ? ------------------------------ From: StudioJNC@aol.com Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 12:29:13 EDT Subject: [Baren 1519] Re: getting institutionalized ... Dear Elisa That is certainly a very generous offer to show the Baren portfolio in the gallery. I agree with Jean. We are trying to gain publicity and widen our horizons, this is a good opportunity to do this. Considering that the whole point of what [Baren] is about is the communication of our knowledge and love of woodblock printmaking, the idea of having our portfolio displayed here and there is one that I think should be heartily encouraged. The idea has popped up twice before on the forum, from Ray in [Baren 535] and from me in [Baren 556] ... but now that the creation of an actual portfolio is in sight, the idea is becoming more practical. The only reservation I can express is the same one I did before - to prepare such an exhibition, on however small a scale, takes a lot of work ... The person involved in each case will have to be prepared to spend quite a bit of time on it. ... and will thus need the support and cooperation of all the other members - whose work also will benefit from such exposure and promotion. Julio wrote: >There could be information displayed pointing to the Baren Forum >and members web-sites for those interested in contacting the artists. This, I think, is a very important point. When it comes time to prepare the colophon page for the portfolio, let's think ahead to these exhibition opportunities, and also include some kind of sheet that can be easily duplicated and passed out at any such events, and which would contain general [Baren] P/R material and of course, contact info for each person (at least for those who _wished_ to be contacted). I think that in general, ideas from [Baren] members for helping expose this wonderful art and craft of woodblock printmaking should be assisted by the group in whatever way possible. That's what we're here for. Dave ------------------------------ From: April Vollmer/John Yamaguchi Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 22:34:59 -0400 Subject: [Baren 1521] Show Elisa: Love the show idea! Adamantly for it! I think it will be a great group of prints that a gallery would be proud to exhibit! I'm all in favor of getting more woodcuts out there for people to see. (Also: framing under plain glass for a month or so shouldn't hurt them, just can't leave them against the glass for a long period.)
