Those photos are wonderfully detailed and close up. That new camera is your most helpful piece of equipment, Dave. * * * * I just got back from Danbury, Connecticut and met fellow Baren member, Elisa Flynn, and her husband Ernest Lattanzio. Not only was the gallery they help run a delight to see, but they were part of a team that put together the annual Gasball Fest, an arts and music festival that was by far one of the most fun events I've attended in ages!!! I hope Elisa will join the print exchange. I also thank them for giving me the opportunity to show my Vampyr prints in their entirety. That will be coming up in September. They both printed beautifully, although the professional seemed to print the lines a little softer. Hardly noticable to me but to a real pro it might make a difference. I will use the student grade from now on as they look good to me. Now you will really get everyone mixed up in the Jean, Jeanne department !!!! Two days ago I wanted to ask you whether you would commonly use a single board to print separate color areas (combining small printing areas onto a single plank), but couldn't think of a way to phrase it without my question being confusing. My questions were answered quite easily when I stumbled on your new colour block entries this afternoon! That new camera that Fumi has been wielding is certainly a great help in illustrating these entries. *** Now a question... has anyone out there also discovered the occasional sand or sand-like grit in their paper? Lately, I have been coming across some sandy particles in kitikata that can pose certain problems in printing. The most dangerous is that if not noticed in time, the sand (or whatever it is) can actually mark the surface of the board. Tearing of the paper is another problem. Has anybody else stumbled upon this annoyance? *** Roll up, roll up! Step right this way! Only a few more days to stake your claim to a part in the first [Baren] folio exchange. Write to me by 1 September (that's one week from today, folks) to be included. You'll be out of luck if you ask to join after that date. It turned out to be a very good choice indeed. I've tried and tried, but have _never_ been able to take clear pictures like that with a 'regular' camera. But now that my two assistants have returned to Canada for another ten months, it's going to be a bit more difficult to get such photos. I'll try using the self-timer, but that's obviously going to be a bit awkward. *** >Now a question... has anyone out there also discovered the occasional >sand or sand-like grit in their paper? There are two or three places this can come from (aside from careless handling after the paper has been manufactured): - - plant fibres themselves can have gritty silicate particles embedded in them. If the papermaker is really serious about beating the stuff properly before he dips the paper, these will be removed, but if he is a bit careless there will be some left. - - some paper is dried by leaving it on boards out in the sun. It goes up on these boards when wet, so if there is a bit of grit in the wind that day ... - - the water that the paper maker uses - from his local stream - is obviously one possible source, and in fact I was talking to Yamaguchi san about this just last week. We've had one hell of a year for rain here, and it is causing problems for printmakers in at least three ways: - -- the stream in their village is way up, almost to flood levels. It's not going to endanger any houses or anything like that, but the water itself is completely muddy and full of debris. They are trying to filter out as much of the crud as possible, but ... - -- we can forget it for bamboo skins this year. What few skins did come off the plant in good condition, rotted as fast as they fell. We're going to have to depend on Chinese and Taiwan imports again this winter. Not to be nationalistic about this, but the stuff they send isn't really suitable for printmaker's needs ... - -- Last time this wet wet summer happened, back six or seven years ago, the kozo crop the next winter was a very poor one. Again, we had to go the import route. All my prints for the next year or so came out a different colour ... And the price of paper nearly doubled ... *** >Only a few more days to stake your claim to a part in the first [Baren] >folio exchange. I should mention - for the benefit of all the [Baren] lurkers out there - - that _any_ member of the forum is welcome to participate, even if you haven't been a regular contributor. I can think of no better way for you to introduce yourself to the group ... I have been extremely busy and so didn't get to write in until now. I also have a request. When you put out the finalized list of participants, can you recap the issues like size of print, shipping info, etc.? It would be really great if that info was all in one e-mail, and also, my computer crashed quite horribly last week, and I lost alot of my saved Baren info, so it would be of invaluable help to me, and I'm sure it would make it easy for others as well. Thanks! - - elisa flynn ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V4 #255 ***************************
