I really got a kick out of it! Also a really nice print, one that I will frame and put in a place of honor. A hoot! What a delightful but curious little book. Very interesting that it was produced as a guide to introducing the craft (as rewarding but somewhat more complicated than basket weaving, it seems) to school children. Some of the techniques suggested are most unusual. There are, nonetheless, many little gems of useful suggestions-- sanding the edges of the "islands of color" for instance when leaving wood to support the paper. What a grand conceptual work of art your web site is, Graham! It's at http://www.islandnet.com/~gscholes/westcoastgal.html I liked your lighthouse light going around too, but it went off almost immediately. Gosh, I thought every body knew this. If you don't sand those little island of support you will get a nasty ridge when you burnish over them with the baren. Put a quarter in and it works fine. Ya.. and you know what....my elevator goes all the way to the top. I must say it was a slow fussy job getting the site to work smoothly. It was worth it. Now I must go and fine that brick. But can I add something to this thread ...? None of the traditional carvers here do anything at all to these 'sharp' edges of the block. They are left just as they are when the 'scooping' chisel makes its final cuts ... The printers consider it a point of pride to be able to use the baren so expertly that no marks are ever left by these sharp edges. The baren skims across the paper so smoothly that it never touches them. Here is a photo of a typical block: http://www.woodblock.com/forum/archives/vol03/extras/carved_block.jpg Now that I have said that, I should add that in my own case, I cut away the sharpest part of the exposed edge with a flat chisel. I'll have to save the 'point of pride' until I've got the skill to go with it ... I wonder now, is that lighthouse at the head of your page manned, or one of those pernicious automated things?
