This new stuff (in the encylopedia) is great, and Ray I feel encouraged. I had written to Dave about my last try at soaking paper. I realized something was wrong in how it behaved and when I looked it up in Daniel Smith's catalog, I realized the paper wasn't sized. In trying to undo the bundle I accidentally knocked into a small table upon which sat a heavy plaster sculpture my son Jeremy had produced last semester in grad school. Well, I didn't know it til it hit, but it did hit. I was almost knocked out. So with a headache, I abandoned the paper soaking and I haven't had the "gumption" to start again with the BFK Rives Lightweight that a friend gave me. That evening I consoled myself picking away with my needle doing a James Mundie style portrait of my friend Beth who was having a very good art day compared to mine. The portrait turned out interesting, and I'm looking at that BFK paper, saying "not today", "not just yet." Because now I'm worrying about the baren part of it and the mixture of the rice paste and I don't want to waste good paper, etc. Anyway, Ray, you've got the gumption I need right now. ***** Dave, I went to the Asian Plaza in Cleveland to see if I could find the sumi ink pieces you mentioned. There wasn't a bit of calligraphy material there. But I had fun buying interesting foods, and herbs. Then I went to a store called Prizm. No sumi ink of any kind. Back to the catalogs. Yep. Oh and John, The little illustration you supplied is interesting in that you suggested the dovetail method. You don't have to go to this trouble. A simple tongue and grove works fine and is a lot easier to cut if you don't have a dovetail heads for your table router or shaper. You can set up the table saw and make straight cuts and then attach the spline with a single screw in the centre as explained previously.
