That's two hours by automobile from Burton, Ohio where I live. Dave, I pounded a few pieces of sumi ink that I mentioned I had stowed somewhere in my studio. I took the project outside and put it in a thick aluminum try and covered it with a dish towel and hammered the fool out of it. Then I forgot what else to do and came up to the computer and opened up to the Baren Digest and saw I had already hammered more than you said. I had about 2 tablespoons worth. But it is now soaking in my studio. You're right about the distinctive fragrance. And I know where there's an Asian Mall in Cleveland where I bet I could get the sumi ink pieces. Thanks for the tip. ***** James mentioned regarding another exhibit in Philly: > "Heroes and Ghosts: Japanese Prints by Kuniyoshi" > 25 April to 28 June 1998 Cities, those sirens, pull our art hearts back to them, despite our vow to escape. I'm glad so many people would like to come to my show! And sorry you (mostly) can't! (Websites are good for getting the general idea, but better to see the real thing!) But that is part of the beauty of BAREN, it's a great way to keep in touch with people from all over. I did think perhaps some of Baren's 'quiet' ones might be from the NY area....In any case, Baren members are invited to A.I.R. Gallery, 40 Wooster Street, between Broome and Grand Streets, Soho, New York City (212-966-0799) at 5:00 on Friday May 15, 1998, to see April Vollmer's (that's me) hanga woodcuts. Matt Brown will be in town participating in a print fair in Central Park, and we have invited future member (as soon as he gets a computer) Bill Paden to join us. I loved David's musings about why we share information...he is ESPECIALLY generous taking time to help people with less experience, and I can't imagine all the time it must take to maintain the website! I know I always benefit in unexpected ways when I help other people...I hope he does too. We gain strength from sharing information as a group...about opportunities, sources for materials...the right name for the print paper we're using (kizuki hosho!!!) And I was very interested in Jame's Kuniyoshi show information....unfortunately, it coincides with my show, and when my show comes down I'll be off to Italy for vacation until June 22...not much chance to make it to Philadelphia, even for a double hitter! Also, I was so glad to hear Bill Ritchie's voice...we were in e-mail contact recently, Baren is a good way to stay in touch ....WELCOME!
