I have heard of it before. I think I remember Bill Richie using it to chine colle on one of his prints, in a video that he made. Thanks, Phil ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 22:52:05 -0800 Subject: [Baren 541] Baren Show Ray' You should stay away more often. This is a great idea. Suggestion re framing. I very often mat and frame to work but do not put any glass on it. This makes shipping cheaper and more important reduces the problems of shipping glassed items. This would mean that all you have to do is to pop glass into the aluminum frame. I suggest aluminum as it is the easiest for you to open and close when putting in glass. Also it is more durable than a wood frame. Each person would send money for the glassing so you are not out of pocket. When stipulating the size, state it as an maximum of total inches of two dimensions. 16 x 20 = 36" So you could have a frame piece 24 x12 for instance. I have one important question ...Is security going to be a problem? I agree but what do you think about plexiglass or something other than glass for safety and shipping? Personally, I do not like anything covering my prints. >Each person would send money for the glassing ... Thanks for the suggestions. This will take place, if it takes place at all, far enough into the future so that we can explore all ideas and work out the bugs well in advance. >I have one important question ...Is security going to be a problem? In most cases this is not a problem. City hall's, airports, museum's and galleries have excellent security. The art gallery at the University of Central Florida however is an open gallery. I have been there for three print shows and just walked in and never saw anyone else. Could I have taken a work off the wall and walked out? I do not know and of course since I do not think that way, had no asnwer. The university tells me they have never had a work of art stolen and if the art was mine, I would not worry. However, the art will not be mine and unless I can get some assurances about security, UCF would be skipped. Of course, one solution will be how the art is hung. There are security systems but now we are talking about more money. We will have to satisfy ourselves about this and a dozen other points if everyone is to participate and be comfortable. For one thing, I have no earthly idea how many participants we are talking about. I know there are a number of people reading this right now who have never made their presence known. It is easy to count active members but there could be another 40 in the woodwork. (Actually, I would love it.) As I think about this, additional ideas come to mind. If an artist wishes to replace one of their two works with a new piece, as long as they are willing to pay the expenses, there is no reason this can't be done. The reason for this thought is this. When I relocate to Baltimore/Washington, I will no longer have the responsibility of placing Maryland Printmakers folio. I see no reason why Baren couldn't just continue with its group show and I will continue to represent it. Does this mean you are giving up the print permanently? Yes and no. As long as we are able to place the show, first in Florida, than the mid-Alantic states, if it gives the artists publicity, possible sales, and costs little, why not? On the other hand, any time any artist wants to opt out, their art will immediately be returned. Since we are talking about multiples, I see no reason any of us would not want to give up one copy each from two prints from a run for an extended period of time. Of course, this all presupposes Baren members trust me. After all, this could be a clever ruse to add to my art collection. (And heaven help me if anyone checks the FBI files. Why in the hell do you think I wear this itchy beard?) :>') What I am looking for now is just a feel for, is this a crack pot idea or does it have merit? Graham, if most agree with you, it is my feeling that by the time we are ready to go, all of the bugs will be worked out and everyone's questions answered. There is another thought. I do not feel as close to MP as I do to members of Baren, although that may change over time. There is always the possiblity MP would not want to take on the expenses of shows in Florida. (There is some debate on their board about this.) If they change their mind, I would have no problem having just a Baren show. Thoughts everyone?
