Matt, I just took a look at your new additions. Also I discovered something! I thought because your text was such a light color I wouldn't be able to print out anything. But I tried just to see, and what a nice surprise! Now I can dispense with this awkward notebook. I feel like I have a nice little course to study (down at the kitchen table, of course). I'll try this with Graham and Dave and whoever else I can find. This will help a lot, peo- ple, because everytime I wanted to study I had to go upstairs to the computer, wait for all the hookups to the web, then I'd have only 10 minutes to study before getting automatically shut off. The frustration coupled with the number of calls I had to make to the provider's number was making me wonder if I'd ever get anywhere (I mean with the study part). Your woodblock print of your studio is impressive, Matt. I'm curious how you get such nice reproductions of the prints (I mean it looks pretty good up on the screen). Anytime I've scanned in my work it looks good on the screen as long as I'm working from the scanner program, but the minute I put it into a save file, it looks awful on the screen, but prints out okay. I am a painter/printmaker residing in Philadelphia PA and currently exhibiting with the Creative Artists Network (a non-profit organization founded in 1984 to promote the work of emerging artists). I invite you all to view some examples of my recent work in the on-line gallery of C.A.N.'s updated web site (www.libertynet.org:80/~canart); I will next be exhibiting a series of new prints and drawings with C.A.N. this May, so if any of you happen to be in Philadelphia around that time, drop in and have a look. I received my training in the various printmaking arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (I later went on to receive my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania). It was at the Academy that I found the joy of the board, through the kind introduction of the woodcutter Dan Miller. I find myself concentrating on woodcut at the moment-- largely because I don't have access to a printshop right now-- although I am also devoted to etching and mezzotint. Woodcut has always been my first love I suppose, and I am pushing myself and the material to achieve the same sort of tonal qualities I could more easily produce through drawing or aquatint. I work on plank pine with a razor blade and etching and sewing needles to get my desired effect, exposing the natural grain of the board to modulate shadows. I look forward to exchanging thoughts on the craft with all of you. You might review it and let us know if there's a correction to be made, or maybe I'm just doing something wrong. Looking forward to seeing your work, and interacting within the Forum. I'm especially glad to see a new member who is working in a type other than the Japanese-based colour tradition. I for one, look forward to learning more about your work and methods. Gary said: > ... the address didn't open ... Gary, did you remember to add the 'http://' to the address James gave? The complete address should read: http://www.libertynet.org:80/~canart I checked it a few minutes ago, and it was working fine ... (The layout of the 'gallery' at that address is a bit confusing. I clicked on James' name and a painting came up. I then clicked on 'next' and 'next' etc., and after a few pictures found a sequence of quite strange works coming onto the screen. Please note that only the first three you see are from James - one oil painting, and two woodcuts.) James, so that everybody can learn about this, could you 'copy/paste' for [Baren] members some of the things you wrote to me the other day that described how you made those prints? I had asked James: >Very interesting work. The pieces are described as 'woodcuts', but are >these cut on the plank with a knife? > >How did you get the different greys? Multiple blocks? ***** A small request for information ... My two teenage daughters will be coming to stay with me here in Tokyo for the months of July and August, and I've been casting around for a good 'summer job' for them. It occurs to me that if I get them busy with the Macintosh and my scanner, they could perform a very useful service by scanning in some of the old out-of-print books on printmaking that I have here. I could then show them how to use 'Claris Home Page' and they could build some entries for the Encyclopedia ... My question - does anybody have experience with OCR? Can you recommend good software? I did remember the http:// though Dave. I know I'm forgetful, but come on! I just don't have computer karma like you guys. You guys just think and the keys move all by themselves. I have to use my fingers. Gary ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V2 #110 ***************************
