Now you need to tell me what knife to buy. I, too, use Dockyard micro tools. I am about to order the set you say you use. The sets I have are very small and have tools I don't fine parti- cularly useful. It was after I ordered, I realized I would have preferred the set of just gouges. I have used an exacto knife to make the kinds of cuts you say you do with the Japanese knife. Also, Matt you mentioned the kitchen table. What is there about kitchen tables? I have a whole room that I have turned into a nice working little studio, but I like the kitchen table. I think it's being near the refrigerator that's nice. I was going to dampen some paper yesterday when I read it would take two hours and I felt okay about that. Then it said after that you must stack the paper a certain way, wrap it, and wait overnight. This method is probably not going to work for an impatient person like me. When I have the urge to work, I feel waiting takes away from the charge. What happens if you go ahead after just two hours of dampening? Never say never, but there is a lot you can learn being sensitive to your tools, listening to what they tell you about carving and printing....and good tools do speak! P.S. Don't forget that Japanese knives (to) come in left and right handed versions! Be sure to get the right one! I use a right handed one from McClain's...4 mm seems a good standard, thinner is likley to break, thicker won't turn tight curves....
